Dashain gift ideas and Tihar gifts for family abroad, 2026
On this page
The best Dashain gift ideas for family abroad are things they will keep after the festival, sent early enough to arrive before tika. In 2026 tika falls on Wednesday 21 October. Below are gifts for parents, brothers, sisters and friends, with prices and the last sensible day to order. We make the prints named here, print them to order in the EU and deliver within the EU.
What are good Dashain gift ideas for family abroad?
Pick something they can keep in sight all year: a print with words from home in Devanagari, a map of a trek someone in the family walked, a family photo book, or a gift card if you are not sure what they would choose. This year's Dashain order-by date has passed, so a gift card is the choice now: it arrives by email at once. For Tihar, order a print early, because each print is made to order.
In 2026, Dashain runs from Ghatasthapana on Sunday 11 October to Kojagrat Purnima on Sunday 25 October. (Sources: Embassy of Nepal in Cairo, public holiday list; Hamro Patro calendar.) When the family is spread across countries, a gift that says home tends to land better than an expensive one.
These are the prints we would pick for a Dashain gift:
- Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्. The Sanskrit line means "the whole world is one family", which suits a family living in three countries. From €29.95.
- Euta haate taali bajdaina, एउटा हाते ताली बज्दैन. The Nepali proverb says one hand alone can't clap, meaning it takes cooperation. From €29.95.
- Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, the Sanskrit verse that reads "May all beings be happy, may all beings be free from illness". From €29.95.
- A trek route map for the relative who walked Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit or another of the ten routes we print. From €29.95.
Every word and verse print shows the line large in Devanagari with the English meaning underneath, so a child who grew up abroad can read it too. The full Sanskrit line is in our Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam print, and Amrit writes about spending Dashain with his family in Belgium in Dashain 2026 away from home.
What is a good Tihar gift for a brother or sister?
A good Tihar gift for a brother or sister is one that fits the sibling you have. A map of a trek they walked works for the one who still talks about the mountains. A Nepali proverb print they will recognise from home works for the one who teases you. Each print is made to order, so check the delivery window on the product page before you buy.
- Ghar ko baagh, ban ko syaal, घर को बाघ, बन को स्याल. A tiger at home, a jackal in the forest: said about someone bold among family and timid everywhere else. Most of us have a sibling it fits. From €29.95.
- Sahasa, साहस, courage, for a brother or sister starting a new job or a new country. From €29.95.
- Ekta, एकता, unity, for siblings who live far apart. From €29.95.
- A trek route map of the route they walked. The ten routes include Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Langtang Valley and Ghorepani Poon Hill, each in a light and a dark version. From €29.95.
The proverb prints sit in our Voices of Home collection, and five Nepali proverbs and what they mean explains each one word for word.
What gift should I send my Nepali mom?
A good gift for a Nepali mom is a print with a word she uses. Maya, माया, means love and affection in Nepali (in Sanskrit it means illusion), and it reads as a message from you every time she passes it. Shanti, peace, and Kripa, grace, are gentler choices. Each is a single word in Devanagari with its meaning underneath, from €29.95.
If she would rather not have a frame on the wall, the word prints also come on a wood hanger, from €56.95 at 30 x 40 cm. A framed 30 x 40 cm print costs €71.95. The Maya print is the one we would start with.
Can I send a Dashain gift card?
Yes, you can send a Dashain gift card. A Jhilke gift card comes in amounts from €10 to €200 and is digital, so there is no print or delivery time to wait for. It is the one gift on this page you can still send after the order-by dates, and it lets the person choose their own word, verse or trek map.
When should I order a Dashain or Tihar gift so it arrives in time?
Each print is made to order. The product page shows the delivery window for your country. This year's Dashain order-by date has passed, and a gift card arrives by email at once. For Tihar, order early, because each print is made to order, and check the delivery window on the product page.
Delivery dates are estimates, so earlier is safer, especially for a framed print going to a smaller town.
How much does delivery cost, and where do you deliver?
We deliver within the European Union only. Delivery is a flat €5.95, and free on orders from €40. Two small word prints at €29.95 each come to €59.90, so they ship free. There are no customs charges, because orders stay inside the EU.
If the print is not right, standard prints can be returned within 30 days of delivery, and we pay for the return shipping. If your family lives outside the EU, in the UK, Australia or the US, we cannot deliver to them yet.
